Hemorrhoids are puffy veins located in the lower part of the rectum and the anus.
Hemorrhoids may be caused by:
- Anal infections
- Sitting for long periods of time
- Straining during bowel movements
- Constipation
- Certain diseases, like liver cirrhosis
There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal and external
Internal hemorrhoids occur just inside the anus, at the beginning of the rectum. But they can be large, sagging veins that bulge out of the anus all the time. They can be painful if they swell out and are squeezed by the anal muscles. Treatment includes improving bowel habits and using elastic bands to pull the internal hemorrhoids back into the rectum, or removing them surgically
External hemorrhoids are veins that lie on the outside of the anus.It occurs when blood within the vein clots, and can cause significant pain. The external hemorrhoidal veins sometimes may burst and a blood clot forms under the skin. This agonizing condition is called a pile.Treatment includes removing the clot and vein under local anesthesia.
